چکیده

Abstract Background Brief, innovative, mechanistically-driven psychological treatments for body dissatisfaction are needed. We aimed to explore the occurrence of body-related mental images among females reporting a subjective sense (study 1), and investigate potential efficacy single session imagery rescripting (ImRS) reduce (Study 2: pilot; Study 3 randomized controlled trial). Methods Results In study 1 (n = 31), participants reported both positive negative imagery. Frequency valence such were significantly related dissatisfaction. The pilot trial 63) indicated feasibility, whereby ImRS distressing image reduced believability, vividness, affect distress within-session one-week post-session versus an active placebo condition (Expressive writing about thoughts emotions). However, did not result in significant changes was 113) with conditions—ImRS, Expressive writing, wait-list control. resulted reduction controllability caused by compared condition, after intervention. there no reductions from baseline 1-week assessment, nor post-hoc analyses at 1-month follow-up. Findings suggest that seems alleviate properties (i.e., has proximal effects as hypothesized our mechanistic account), but does bring change transfer downstream more distal effects). Conclusions Given some promising on emotions, lack effect itself, further investigation format, dose focus this context is warranted.

A randomized controlled trial of The Body Project: More Than Muscles for men with body dissatisfaction.

OBJECTIVE Pressures for men to conform to a lean, muscular ideal have, in part, contributed to eating disorder and muscle dysmorphia symptoms, yet few programs have been developed and empirically evaluated to help men. This study investigated the acceptability and efficacy of a cognitive dissonance-based (DB) intervention in reducing eating disorder and muscle dysmorphia risk factors in men wit...

Efficacy and mechanisms of imagery rescripting and imaginal exposure for nightmares: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Recurrent nightmares can effectively be treated with cognitive-behavioral techniques such as imagery rehearsal therapy, which involves imagery rescripting (IR) of nightmares, and imaginal exposure (IE) therapy. However, the underlying mechanisms of these treatments remain largely unknown. To investigate this, we identified a number of variables that might mediate the therapeutic effe...

Implicit beliefs about ideal body image predict body image dissatisfaction

We examined whether implicit measures of actual and ideal body image can be used to predict body dissatisfaction in young female adults. Participants completed two Implicit Relational Assessment Procedures (IRAPs) to examine their implicit beliefs concerning actual (e.g., I am thin) and desired ideal body image (e.g., I want to be thin). Body dissatisfaction was examined via self-report questio...
